n800 is home!
I was pleasantly surprised by a UPS man arriving yesterday with my fixed n800. I bought it back in January when they first came out over here, then I suffered early adopter syndrome and it died in February. Well, less died, more sort of had repeated bouts of something near-fatal. I signed up to some forums and it turned out to be very common amongst the first batches. The touch-screen would die completely, sometimes turning it off and on again would work, but often you just had to wait. While it wasn’t working the buttons would spazz making it unusable. Then it’d come back, but the right-side of the screen would be about as sensitive as a brick.
I finally got around to sending it back to Nokia Europe last week (figured I should as the warranty ends in January). When it arrived today I ripped off the packaging, found a note saying it had been fixed and that I should check the repair slip… so I spent 20 minutes going through everything over and over, there is no repair slip. It’s the same n800 I sent to be repaired, so I hope they did something! I’ve been installing applications on it for a good few hours and so far it hasn’t died, which is a good sign. Froze a couple of times which scared me, but they only lasted a few seconds. Phew! The screen does look like it may have been either replaced or moved about. It now slopes down towards the right a fair bit (hardly noticeable, I was just inspecting it) so I suppose that could help with the right-side issues.
Soooo many applications have come out since I last used it, it’s awesome! There is a patched kernel already out and the new firmware that’s in beta to allow SDHC cards. 16Gb of space, not bad for a diddy little pocket-beastie
I’ve also found that pretty much all the web-apps designed for the iPhone work really nicely on it too. I’ve got the mozilla browser engine on now and that is sooo much better than the opera one. Doesn’t crash on ajaxy sites for a start. Apparently this is the standard one on OS2008. I did install the beta for a bit before I sent mine back to be fixed, but as I’ve installed so many apps I’m gonna wait until it’s released which should be fairly soon.
Taking it out with me this weekend, so pleased to have it back and working. Will probably post up a list of apps that I like soon as Play have them really quite cheap at the moment and I already know of about 4 people who have ordered them
Only problem I have with it is the camera is rubbish, but tbh I have a camera on my phone and a decent dSLR so it’s no big deal. Also, it’s been out for a while as has the n770 and now the new n810 has been released… so why are Nokia still listing it as a damn mobile/cell phone?!! On the return form I had to send I scribbled out IMEI everywhere and put the MAC address in as it seemed the only way.
